APPLICATIONS.

APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Applications open on July 24 at 12:01AM EST. Please post your applications on this page!

You may app up to two characters per round. The total amount of characters you may have at this time is four. You may have two characters from the same canon, however these characters can not have met or will have no reason to do so in the future. We will decide this on a case-by-case basis.

Reserves are not a requirement. However, a reserve is an excellent way to state your intentions and to give us a heads up to research your canon and character so that we can process it faster.

If you are asked for revisions, then you have seventy-two hours to reply to the comment with what we have asked.

If you would like details on a rejection then you may PM the mod account or reply to the comment and we will be as detailed as possible.

_________applications.

Character Info;
Character Name: Castiel
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Link: This is a concise history of Castiel by season of his appearance.
Canon Point: Season 5 finale.
Character Age: Unknown, has been alive since the Big Bang. His vessel appears to be in his 30s.
Character Suitability: N/A
Personality: Castiel is an Angel of the Lord. Among the Host of Heaven, he is a warrior of God, a captain of the Garrison... executing the will of their Father through the upper management -- the Archangels -- with unquestioning loyalty and dedication. When God commanded him to carry a message, he did so. When He ordered the destruction of a settlement, Castiel carried this out personally as an avenging angel sending a very different kind of message. Castiel was a good, obedient soldier.

...That is, until he met Dean Winchester. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Castiel is a man of subtleties. When he is first encountered in the series, his mannerisms and speech were stoic, oddly serene and practically alien. As time goes on and he spends more time with his 'charge', he gradually begins to show more emotion, the depth and range of his expressions expanding greatly, but only in subtle shifts of tone and expression. In a way, the slightest lean of his head and a hesitant reply becomes as obvious to read as a sign saying, "I'm not sure I follow you." Castiel would open his mouth and speak the blunt, honest truth -- no matter the consequences. It was out of deep respect and love for his Father that he admired mankind, despite their flaws, simply because God chose them to rule the earth. But after spending time with humans on earth, his admiration for his Father's "works of art" had become more empathetic.

He began to feel attachment, to forge strong bonds of companionship and friendship. Where his relationships were previously purely of a professional nature, one of superiors who acted as leaders and those who followed their orders, he had begun to sympathize with their pain. He would grieve (in his own way) when those closest to him did. He would offer a little smile when his friend laughed. He'd rest a hand on his shoulder in comfort when Dean seemed lost in despair. Despite the concerns that he'd grown too close to the humans he protected, and despite the fact that angels were not supposed to feel such strong emotions and ties with mankind, he began to learn how.

But that doesn't mean he was particularly good at it, either. Castiel is often at a loss as to how to properly behave in an emotionally charged situation. While he can comfort, it is limited -- He fails to lie to spare someone's feelings, only to fumble through an attempt far too late to be at all effective.

Castiel was one of the remaining angels directly involved in the lives of the Winchesters who still had faith that their Father had not abandoned them, seeking him out when all seemed lost and going at any length to find him to ask him to fight Lucifer. All of this to save Dean from the extraordinarily heavy burden on his shoulders as the 'Sword of Michael', or the Archangel Michael's vessel and to save the world from being burned to a cinder by Lucifer, knowing that it would mean pitting brother against brother.

Although eventually, he fell into despair and lost faith in God when his request for aid was refused as essentially 'not his problem', he went on a 'bender', turning to drink to drown away his frustration and feelings of betrayal and abandonment. It must have been the very thing that had caused so many of the other angels to despair and lose their way, resorting to bringing out the Apocalypse just because they were tired of caring for the world without God’s help.

Orders. Goals. He worked best under such conditions. Given a path and his renewed faith, he felt his resolve strengthen, giving him renewed confidence and patience. From this point in canon at the end of season 5, Castiel has renewed confidence and sense of mission, but has not yet returned to Heaven to see what this new sense of free will has done to it.

Powers & Abilities: NOTE: I realize he has a lot of potentially twinky powers. I am a firm believer of obtaining consent from players prior to using powers, because I'd rather have fun than 'win'. :3 And let's face it, Cas gets his ass beat on a regular basis.
  • Angel Cavity Search - More painful than it sounds, if you believe it. Castiel can shove his hand and forearm deep into a person's chest, lighting up what appears to be scattering vein-line paths of burning light just under the skin. This excruciating experience might cause permanent physical damage in some people. The results of this ability is being able to read someone's soul -- specifically if someone has a 'mark' on it (kind of like a deed, someone signed the soul to own it) or to detect if someone's soul is intact or even present. Alternatively, he can use this to touch the soul of a human being -- gingerly -- to siphon off some of it's pure energy. This is very dangerous and leaves both the angel and the human feeling frazzled after the painful, stressful process. (Perhaps touching a human soul is the only means for Castiel to regain full power on a very temporary basis, but he would hate doing this, as seen later in canon -- if he ever resorts to this, he would have no desire to attempt it a second time.)

  • Enhanced Senses - Angels are able to see things that are invisible to humans, such as Enochian sigils, Reapers and other things outside the range of human perception. In addition, Castiel can locate anyone not obfuscated from angelic sight as a sort of 'angelic GPS'. (Powered down, his 'angelic GPS' doesn't work. He must be present in order to sense anything.)

  • Enochian/Blood Magic - Banishing and Exorcising are more commonly used, as are Locating spells. Castiel can exorcise demons with a touch, although some are too powerful. The Banishing sigil works on angels, regardless of rank. In desperate times, he can even carve the sigil on his body and become a mobile banishing 'bomb' -- At the risk of banishing himself to some random location.  He can also create a warding sigil against angels, preventing any to enter where he's marked it in blood. (I sincerely doubt angels and demons will be something he runs into very often, so its likely never to come into play. I would say that banishing sigils for angels and exorcisms for demons are up to whomever might be affected by it and the same goes with locating spells. I suspect that if these are ever to be used in game, it would be player vs. player.)

  • Pyrokinesis/Incinerate - Not one to normally resort to such strictly destructive powers, Castiel does have the ability to set things ablaze with divine fire with a gesture, which seems to have the same effect as salting and burning something to destroy a demon or spirit. He can also extinguish flame... even a circle of Holy Fire, as long as he's outside of it. (This has been reduced to manipulating/starting small fires, like lighting torches or allowing someone to escape a burning building by lowering the intensity of fire in a doorway, or extinguishing a fireplace quickly.)

  • Increased Strength/Stamina - Castiel is stronger and more resilient than appearances would lead one to believe. He can easily pick up and throw a fully grown man, crush brick and mortar with a punch into a wall, etc. Normally, punching an angel is like punching an iron wall. In fact, you can quite clearly hear a clank if you attempt it, like Dean once did. Furthermore, as an angel, he does not require food, sleep or water to survive. Injury sustained by mundane (and even some supernatural) means have little effect on him, and wounds heal very quickly (for example, Castiel is stabbed in the heart and shot multiple times, and he simply looks amused). In addition, angels are immune to all diseases and plagues. Oddly, he is not completely immune to the effects of alcohol, but it seems to take as much alcohol as a liquor store contains to get him heavily intoxicated. (Immunity to disease and toxins are still in effect, and he still doesn't require food, sleep or drink to survive. However, he's not like hitting metal anymore.)

  • Invisibility - Just like it sounds. (Powered down, I suggest he becomes obfuscated... eyes tend to slide right over him as long as he doesn't do anything attention grabbing, like attack someone or climb a lamp post, or talk. Furthermore, any sounds he makes are muffled, his heat signatures are lessened, and any scent he gives off is muted. Instead of the all powerful invisibility, he's got a stealth mode.)

  • Lay On Hands - With a touch Castiel can heal, render unconscious, alter memories, carve Enochian sigils into bones or organs without damaging anything else... even resurrect a dead person to life. In addition, Castiel can self-heal instantly and restore his clothes to a pristine state. (He is permitted to perform minor miracles -- restoring his clothes to their original state, making broken glass whole again -- and his vessel remains in that eternal five-o'clock shadow state. His healing ability is slowed greatly; minor cuts and wounds heal instantly but otherwise he benefits only from an accelerated natural healing process. A broken leg would take a few weeks rather than a few months, for example. With player consent, he can alter memories or put to sleep, but he can no longer resurrect the dead to life again.)

  • Possession - An angel can possess a willing vessel, as long as they give their consent and as long as they have that special 'something' in their blood that makes them a suitable vessel (generally, it runs in the family). No angel, not even fallen angels like Lucifer, can possess an unwilling host. The experience of being possessed by an angel is reported by one as like 'being chained to a comet' and you can lose all sense of time. (It would be ill-advised for Castiel to leave his vessel, so I'm going to say that he cannot vacate his vessel at all... which in and of itself has very distressing implications.)

  • Salvation - Castiel can rescue humans from Hell, although it may leave a hand print seared into the skin where his hand 'gripped you tight and raised you from perdition'. It did not in the case of Sam Winchester, strangely. (Seeing as this is unlikely to ever come into in-game play, I don't think this one matters.)

  • Smite - Castiel can, with the touch of his hand, cause someone... or something (like a vampire or a demon) to burn from the inside out by planting his hand on their head as bright, burning light fires from their eyes, nose and mouth. The ranged version of this comes in the form of a bolt of lightning from the sky... even on a clear day. (I am open to suggestions on how to power this one down.)

  • Telepathy, Telekinesis, Teleportation (Time & Space) - Castiel is able to enter the dreams of humans and speak to other angels in Enochian, or to psychics telepathically. Angels can also implant visions into the mind of a prophet. He can also speak through EVP. Angels can move objects with their mind, and can increase their focus on even the most delicate manipulations of objects with a gesture. Lastly, Castiel can travel instantly to whatever location (in space or time) he desires as well as teleport someone else with a touch. (Teleportation through time should be only a means to go on hiatus, or it just doesn't work at all. Teleportation through space is limited to short distances, such as navigating through a building, limited to a few miles distance. Repeated teleportation to go across greater distances via shorter ones will prove to be exhausting, and after about a dozen attempts in a row, he will collapse from exhaustion until the next day.)

  • True Form - An angel's true form and voice is overwhelming at best, fatal at worst. It can instill fear, can burn out the eyes of those who look upon it or deafen with it's piercing quality, or kill mortals outright. There are some who are unaffected, however. Castiel's true visage is approximately the size of the Chrysler Building. He can apparently focus this into a destructive explosion of blueish white light from his hands, which can clear a room of living beings/monsters if they don't take care to shut their eyes. (Castiel cannot vacate his vessel at this time, so he will not be able to assume his true form unless someone else has the ability to force him to 'show his face' as Pamela the psychic did in canon. Lastly, the massively destructive area-of-effect ability is not available when powered down.)

  • Items on their Person:
    • Sword of Lucifer - The fancy name for that short-sword all angels come equipped with. The only blade that can kill another angel, and it can apparently kill other supernatural creatures as well... such as a Hellhound.

    • Jimmy's wedding band - Tucked away in his breast pocket, because it reminds him of what Jimmy sacrificed to be his vessel.

    • Aside from a cellphone and his attire, Castiel carries nothing else.

Samples;
First Person Sample: I am not a work of fiction!

[ An unassuming man in a well-used beige overcoat appears, hair dishevelled and expression distantly sullen. He drops a pamphlet titled, Fictional Realitities and YOU with an air of stoic distate. ]

I am at a loss, I -- [ This wasn't supposed to happen. They'd won and he was going to return to Heaven as the new sheriff, as Dean put it... so why was he suddenly trapped here? ] I'm not supposed to be here.

[ The angel applies a bit too much force to the buttons of his cellphone before pursing his lips, his tone lowering. ]

Although it would appear I am... outside of my coverage zone.

[ Snapping shut his cellphone, he returns his attention to the feed, his expression tight and vaugely perturbed. ]

This device has informed me that I am to participate in a Human Regenesis Program, despite the fact that I am not human. I am expected to believe that these -- [ The man gestures to a pile of books titled Supernatural, as well as a series of video cases. ] Are evidence of my existence is but a figment of a human's imagination, not the Winchester Gospel as I know it to be.

[ Yeah, Castiel's denial might be more than problematic. ]

Third Person Sample: Castiel had entered the ruined structure without question, seeking out his friend simply because he had been asked, and the urgent tone in which the request was delivered gave him reason to feel... concerned. They'd been through much together, he and the hunter. It wouldn't do to abandon him in his time of need now. Not while he is so filled with a sense of mission and accomplishment from having averted the apocalypse, even if it did end with their arrival in this strange place.

Each scrape and stomp of his footsteps echoed as the angel picked his way through the dusty, abandoned ruin of a long-forgotten farm, littered with broken skeletons of rotting, wooden furniture and crumbling brick fireplaces and surrounded at all sides by overgrown, wild fields. Each step disturbed layers of dust, clouds of aged, powdered mortar snaking around his ankles, moonlight filtering through shattered and filthy windows to illuminate every particle suspended in the air.

He listened to the silence that hung in the air for a while, the only sign of life being the way his blue eyes scanned the room, his form rigid and still in the darkness.

"Dean?" Castiel asked into the empty halls. This was the spot, wasn't it? The 'rendezvous point' the hunter had requested? He wasn't able to sense his presence, not by the usual means at least -- those sigils he'd carved into his rib cage worked rather effectively to obfuscate him from even his detection, forcing him to seek Dean out by more traditional means (using his eyes) or ask using more of the modern (using a cell phone). Except those didn't work either.

Castiel turned sharply, alarm etching itself in creases around his eyes as he focused into the darkness, squinting to pick out the form nearly indistinct from the shadow it stood in. The angelic blade slipped from his sleeve, his fingers grasping the hilt easily enough.

"Show yourself."

[personal profile] captainmom 2012-07-06 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: How He Presents Himself:
"I was a king, the rightful king of Asgard! Betrayed!"

In a land where brute force and a willingness to run into battle are valued, Loki is seen as weak. While he is a master sorcerer and has the cunning to match he is still viewed as a coward and a sneak amongst his peers. Asgard is a society that is ruled upon these sorts of principles, the belief of might is right is prevalent. Loki is viewed as a coward as he finds more value in planning and magic than force, he often clashes with Thor and co. because of this. It's easy to see this in the way Sif is far more accepted, as she is a warrior-- though she did have to prove herself-- than Loki who is a sorcerer. Even when he lends his hand to battle it's often discredited because Magic is not viewed as anything other than cowardice and he grows resentful because of it.

Loki looks far different than the ideal Aesir, while he is tall, wiry, pale and dark-- the idealized look of the Aesir is far closer to Thor's own image. Bright, golden, powerful and muscular. Many expect, and want, Loki to be more like Thor; as the older brother is charismatic, boisterous, fearless, proud and open. Loki however prefers his silence, the shadows, magic and his privacy; and it is hard for many not to compare the two. Hard for Loki not to compare the two either.

"You are, all of you are beneath me! I am a god, you dull creature, and I shall not be bullied... "

Despite his insecurities and conflict Loki projects a sense of arrogance almost unmatched. He call humanity ants and believes that they crave subjugation, that it is his right to rule simply because he is 'a god'. He demeans the skills of others with words or actions. Pushes and uses these words to manipulate, to bend them to his will and finds a swell of satisfaction when things work out as he sees fit. He tries to disconnect himself from others and project a sense of apathy with it, as if he is above sentiment and sympathy all the while the little cracks in his facade show he is not.

He says poisonous things to get a reaction, pushes and pushes in hopes of raising the ire of others, to force them to lose their composure. Loki seems to delight in the control it give him, even amongst all the chaos he creates he likes to have a firm grasp on the outcome. His plans are generally thought out five or six steps ahead of average; planning so thoroughly that most would struggle to follow his leaps in logic. He knows people well enough that most times he can predict just what to say to rile them or to pacify them. He's that little voice in your ear whispering what you should do and lets you believe it was all your idea in the first place.

His True Motivations:
“The feelings that hurt most, the emotions that sting most, are those that are absurd; the longing for impossible things, precisely because they are impossible; nostalgia for what never was; the desire for what could have been; regret over not being someone else; dissatisfaction with the world’s existence. All these half-tones of the soul’s consciousness create in us a painful landscape, an eternal sunset of what we are.”
— Fernando Pessoa

There is a phenomenon in the Thor which I think speaks clearly of how he views his relations to other characters, particularly those who were supposed to be his friends or family; I mean of course the fact people frequently just tell him to shut up. I think this reaction is normal on their part-- as Loki is known for trickery or lying-- but to him it is just them dismissing his existence entirely. I think it also explains a lot of how he looks at himself on the inside. While he projects a sense of bravado and aloofness I think Loki is probably the most insecure character in Avengers.

Imagine this happens enough through the thousand or so years Loki has been alive-- as he spends most of his time with Thor, Sif or the Warriors Three. And while the lot of them tolerate Loki for Thor's sake, they are not as close to him as his brother (as is probably his fault) and instead favor to tolerate him, at least until everything goes to hell. In Loki's case his words are his biggest source of power; while he is not an incapable fighter, more often than not Loki uses his wit and cunning to win out. He uses these words to reason people into doing things they normally wouldn't, manipulates them into decisions they believe are their own with seeds of deceit carefully planted. The constant silencing of him through the film (when he attempts to speak to Heimdall, stall Thor with the Frost Giants or even speak to Odin during his fight with Thor) is a dismissal of his ability. He feels undermined because of this, compared to the others who are all known for being warriors, Loki values his words highly and being dismissed and ignored feels to him like them undermining him.

This is finalized at the end of Avengers when he is not just cuffed but gagged; his words are his power and they muzzle him. His words are dangerous and it is only after he uses them to manipulate the heroes that they finally realize this.

That isn't to say he's entirely a nice guy and a victim of circumstance; Loki is obviously off-kilter, from the negative way he twists things said to him to the chaos and mayhem he'll cause for attention. I believe Loki is a case of "any attention is good attention" and if he can't get the same positive attention as Thor-- who is the Crowned Prince, Golden Son, etc-- then he will be exactly what he feels people expect of him. The opposite. He'll cause chaos and cruelty, play tricks and pranks because he feels that behaving this way will equalize him to Thor in the sense he will be as bad as Thor is good.

"Because I am the monster who parents tell their children about at night."

Loki has a intense sense of self-loathing and much of it comes to the forefront in this line. He was told most of his life of the Jotun and how they are monsters, listens to his brother tell stories of ridding them all and watches his father fall into silence. He believes that they're monsters, that they would bring the fall of Asgard and then finds out that he is one. That those creatures most fear and despise are his kin, that he is not the true son of Odin and Frigga. It's in this moment that every slight he's felt (real or imagined) becomes part of this-- part of the fact that he is not a true Aesir.

He kills his real father and attempts to destroy all of Jotunheim in order to 'cleanse' himself of being a monster. If no other Jotuns remain than he feels he can be free of his true nature. On that same account he takes it so deeply as part of what he is. These stories about monsters and viciousness, that all Jotun are like this, and decides that he too will be like this. A vicious monster to be feared, because it's who he is. As if his birth was an explanation for his actions. Not to mention discovering that Laufey had abandoned him for being a 'bastard child' and had left him to die in a temple. He takes this as just another instance of being unwanted, unworthy, belonging in either Asgard or Jotunheim.

"And if I do, then what? I love Thor more dearly than any of you, but you know what he is. He's arrogant, he's reckless, he's dangerous! You saw how he was today. Is that what Asgard needs from its King?"

&

"Is it madness? Is it? IS IT? I don't know what happened on Earth to make you so soft! Don't tell me it was that woman?... Oh, it was. Well, when we're done here, maybe I'll pay her a visit myself!"

Much of Loki's inner motivation is jealousy; jealous of his brother, of the way e relates to others, the way he is loved, the way he feels Odin prefers him and probably a dozen of other things.

It's apparent he's usually at his brother's side, attempting to talk sense into him, to reason with him; because he knows that Thor is brash, a brilliant warrior but not a man prepared to be king. It's obvious by the way Thor is more than willing to disobey Odin and go to Jotunheim, prepared to fight without the consideration of what it might do to their political relations, that Odin is tired or even that the lot of them can get killed. Thor thinks himself the best warrior, unable to fall as do many others that stand at his side. Loki, for all his love of Thor (and I do believe he loves him, which is why he also hates him so deeply), is not blind to his faults. Perhaps this is because he is so unlike Thor, a thinker first as opposed to a warrior, and while others all aspire to be like his brother Loki knows him best and has seen fool hearty mistakes in their youth.

I think he gets so enraged that Thor has changed on earth because for so long he has been trying to change Thor, to talk some sense into him. The thought that some mere mortal that Thor has known for three days can do what Loki couldn't in all the years they spent together on Asgard eats at him. Another thing that makes him feel disconnected from his brother, dismissed, forgotten. He already feels as if none will listen, but knows the Aesir are stubborn, but to have him changed so quickly and easily by what Loki considers a inferior being is painful.

It's in this moment he knows Thor has changed; but Loki has too. He went from brilliant plans to all out murder, ready to rid the realms of Jotunheim as his brother would have before. He has always wanted them to be equal, but while he has stooped to this Thor has risen up, changed himself, become a better person and it makes Loki crazy. For they will never be equal no matter what he does, in the end deciding that if he cannot be like Thor then he will be the opposite. The villain.

Headcanon territory:

"You lack conviction."

I believe in this instance that Coulson is right. Loki lacks conviction because there is no real reason he would want Earth. It's not a strategic advantage as it contains nothing (we've seen) that would offer him a way to take over Asgard or any of the other nine realms. Asgard which has always been Loki's true goal. In Thor we see how hard he pushes to try and prove himself once Frigga allows him to wear the crown and take over as king. How much he wants to be the hero, worshiped and respected as Thor would have been. Earth will offer him none of this, while he may have pushed the humans down to rise above it-- they mean nothing to him, they're ants, and not his true goal. The respect of ants means nothing, the respect of Aesir means all.

Stark even wonders about it at one point, why would Loki want to rule Earth? Of course he doesn't have time to think it through but it's a puzzling question to those who do not even know his true motivations.

He doesn't want Earth, he wants a ride home.

A thing to keep in mind is Loki's plans usually have plans those plans have plans and schemes and so on and so forth. Coming in and blowing up a bunch of stuff after making the good guys bicker a little is quite flat for a person of Loki's skill sets.

He steals the tesseract in such a visible way-- which he's been keeping tabs on, as seen in the post-Thor credits scene-- which causes Fury to gather the Avengers and sets things into motion. If he intends for the Avengers to get involved at this point is negligent because he knows the power of the tesseract will draw the attention of Odin and therefor Thor.

It's then he allows himself to be captured-- even Stark and Rogers comment on how odd it is because he could have easily fled but choose not to. Of course then Thor shows up and Loki is sure he has the All-Fathers attention and his trick is already working against those involved. He slips information here or there and in the end he lands defeated-- a good smashing from the Hulk, sure, but he doesn't bother to draw himself away afterward.

He lets the heroes believe they've won, which is the easiest way for him to win. No one second guesses it because they all believe Loki to be weaker than Thor, crazed and a coward. In truth he just needed a way home and a way away from Thanos. They threaten him with pain, with finding him no matter where he may run and obviously have some sort of connection to him. In battling and losing as he did that puts him back in Asgard-- but not just that but under the protection of Thor and the others, not to mention in the position to usurp all that especially if he gets his hands on some of the things hidden in Odin's vault.

Why else would Selvig, while completely at a loss for his sense of self, still install a fail-safe into the portal? Why would Loki lie about possessing the cosmic cube to The Other? Loki isn't a team player and deigns no person worthy of ruling over him, that much is obvious, so why would he subject himself to Thanos' rule?

He wouldn't.

Powers & Abilities:
Superhuman Strength: Loki possesses a formidable strength as a result of his jotun lineage, that is comparable to his Asgardian contemporaries. He kicked a man several yards into a wall, and has thrown another across a room and through a window. He was able to overpower Captain America with ease. His strength also extends his ability to leap distances far in excess of human capability.

Superhuman Durability: As a Jotun, Loki has a resilient body with a tolerance for trauma that's similar to the Asgardians. Of particular note is his pronounced tolerance for cold. Loki has also shown extreme endurance against bullets which just bounce off him. Loki has also taken a blow from Captain America's shield which also failed to injure him. He has also withstood a full blast from a weapon based on the Destroyer. Loki has also withstood a blast from Iron Man's repulsors without being burnt or horribly scarred as well as a fierce beating from the Hulk which Loki walked away from with minor damage (of course being floored and out of action for a short while).

Superhuman Longevity: Loki has the capacity to live for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years. Loki was a baby at the end of the last great war between the Asgardians and the Jotuns over a thousand years ago.

Superhuman Speed/Agility: Loki is fast enough to catch Hawkeye's arrows in mid-flight, inches away from his neck. He also used his speed in his fight against Captain America, during which he easily gained the upper hand, at one point even smashing Cap's shield into the ground. Indeed, had Loki not intended to humiliate the supersoldier, he could easily have killed him.

Sorcery: Loki is a master of magic. He can create illusions, including copies of himself, can teleport others (and possibly himself) to wherever he wants, and can influence people with his mind and was able to exert a more potent hypnotic control when using his sceptre directly on people who were trying to stop him. He can also conceal himself and others from sight. Loki can summon objects out of thin air. When he summons the Casket of Ancient Winters and used it against Heimdall freezing him solid. He can also alter his appearance and attire whenever he wills it..

Cold Manipulation: As a Frost Giant, Loki can generate cold, like when he froze the lightning in the Bifrost Bridge to jam its functions.

Intelligence: Loki has shown that being an "god" of a different world, he has shown to be able to understand, learn and eventually utilize Earth and other alien technology to an excellent degree, such as using the eye device on the scientist, learning to use the control console that controls the cage and flying an Chitauri airship.

Expert Combatant: Loki has extensive combat training that allowed him to fight off and kill several Jotuns in Jotunheim, defeat several S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives, and hold his own against Thor and Captain America for a time.

Items on their Person:
One set Aesir armor,
One set of cuffs,
One gag,
One set of boots,

Samples;
First Person Sample:I know not how these poor creatures escaped from Hel; but if a creature can be killed once, then it can be killed again. [ It's that basic, as far as he's concerned. ] Pitiful, shambling creatures-- it'd be cruel not to put them from their mysery, don't you think? [ Though Loki manages to sound about as unsympathetic as possible, there might even be a bit of amusement brushing through his tone. ]

I know I should find no surprise in the fact that even the feeble souls of humanity are rejected, in all their rights forgotten by their Gods. Tell me, what do you think your chances at survival? [ A breathy sort of sound passes his lips, perhaps more tired than he lets on. ] Man cannot scrounge around, skitter through the darkness forever, and they will always continue to come-- you will be offered no salvation, no new beginning, because in the end you are destined to die. To fail.

Third Person Sample: Loki did not bleed, humans bled. Mortals bled. Pathetic little ants bled when they were crushed under his boot-- but he did not bleed. Yet, here he was pressed against the doorway of a safe haven, trapped with the creatures he had so tried to kill-- not the undead, no, the humans with a wound in his shoulder that felt as unpleasant as it looked. Blood bubbled from between pale fingers, a red stain across the grass green of his tunic, it reminded him of a dozen things-- the bright edges of the sun over Asgard, Thor, of the many he had killed, Germany. He was without such things now, instead forced to rely on his wit and in great desperation the lost souls he had so condemned.

Now he was forced to their level or as close as he had ever been and it filled him with a sense of desperation. How could one hate others if there was no fall back, no magic to curl around his fingers and use to his every whim. Was he still Loki without it? Of course. It is not magic that makes Loki, despite what those of Asgard would believe. He was a trickster far before he was a sorcerer and the power of his words could be as deadly as any blade offered. As a fire without smoke still burned, was still a flame and knew not why it did what it did, simply that it did it-- as was Loki, a trickster who did not need to second guess himself more than the brief moment allowed. He was Loki and it mattered not what power he had or where he hailed from because he always had power-- one he would not allow to be taken from him.

Let them think him weak, let them believe he cannot pry them apart bit by bit and word by word. He will use that, because he may rise far past where they underestimate him to be.

Personality:
Thor may seem very straight forward, but there's a lot of nuances, especially after is exile to Midgard to be taken into when looking at him. We'll first discuss how Thor is pre-exile seeing as that personality is the foundation that gets tempered to a more well rounded, balanced individual after his exile and subsequently, his time in The Avengers.

The first thing you'll notice about Thor is his overwhelming arrogance and pride. He struts around like he is the highest level of awesome the nine realms have ever seen and he's not exactly unjustified in that belief, but it does make him a prick. This will be lessened as he learns humility in exile, but it will still always be a present factor. At this time he does believe himself to be above mortals, not to the extreme Loki does, but just to the point of what Asgardian culture would have him believe. Thor will always rise to a challenge, no matter what it is. It's part of his pride as an Asgardian and as a warrior, even if it's so small as eat this entire box of poptarts without stopping to breathe. Stupid, yes, but partly he sees it as being in a good spirit of competition (and oh is he competitive, oh lordy is he) and partly as being a proud warrior, unafraid and unintimidated.

He's impatient and hot-blooded - quick to anger and quick to act rashly and extremely, do whatever he wants and damn the consequences. When the Jotuns sneak in to attempt a theft, he immediately wants to commit an act that would start a war over a minor incident. He starts proclaiming 'As King of Asgard', trying to through around title, but once shut down, he goes into a rage, flipping a table like a petulant child tossing around toys in a fit. He still goes along with the plan after some convincing and idea-planting on Loki's side, despite the better judgment warnings of his friends. So you can see there, that part of him is not a trait of Asgardian culture, it's a trait of Thor's spoiled prince self wanting to run after glory and revenge and domineering manliness in battle. And as a note: Thor is always combat ready. It's a huge part of his life to be, so even after his exile, he'll still always be ready for a fight - excited, even.

Stubborn and insistent, Thor is often very domineering of things. He'll swoop right on in and take something and swoop away because he needs it and you don't really need an explanation for that do you. That really never changes, even in The Avengers. He's not the best person to work with, because while his judgment might improve, his people skills don't really. When something goes badly or looks like it's going badly, it's I WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN, not 'man i really hope I can stop this'. If someone is being a dick it's 'I will not allow you to do this' not 'I disagree with everything you are'. Allow is an important thing to note - Thor, likely more subconsciously - just believes himself to be in control of situations and have the final say on things, half because of his noble birth and half because, most of the time, if he wants something he's strong enough that no one will be stopping him to get it. There's a definite confidence in his abilities.

If you understand the concept of what a paladin is, you'll understand the ideal that Thor strives for in his demeanor and disposition. He attempts to be noble, upstanding, and absolute in how he does things. Partially it's for the glory of the ideal and partially its for the warrior's code he was raised with. The Norse gods are supposed to be something like armor weighted titans of noble and glorious battle, completely overwhelming in both strength and character and that's what he shoots for. His personality is an obnoxious level of strong and out there, valuing battle and glory and after that is achieved, loud and boisterous reveling and merry-making.

Energy, energy, energy, Thor is like the ADHD energizer bunny, and it sort of goes with the whole high energy lightning thing, but he has absolutely no shame in being bright eyed and bushy tailed and in everyone's face with it. He's loud, outspoken, incredibly restless and wears his emotions on his sleeve most often. If Thor is pissed, it'll be obvious. If he's happy, that'll be obvious too - and that's usually what he is - the bright smiling, winking prince of Asgard. When he pauses to think or seriously contemplate things is about the only time he's really muted - a silent kind of calm passing over him and a void expression. Pre-exile, he's shown to sit and pout when contemplating and isn't too prone to deep moments of thought and weighing of options, more self-centered about things and action, action, action. He's also quick to anger about things pre-exile - easily insulting friends and Loki when pissed and not offering an apology, just assuming he'll be forgiven and they'll understand.

He loves too easily, too openly, trusts people will treat him well because he's spoiled as all hell and trusts that he'll only be getting a slap on the wrist when he does something wrong - this changes after his exile and he learns that actions not only have consequences for himself but for others around him. He learns responsibility for what he does and how he acts.

Though he does have a genuine want to make his father proud, to serve his kingdom and to be a good, noble and fair king. At this point, however, he just has a very immature idea of how to go about that due to the manner in which he was raised and the effects of Asgardian war culture on him. He's a perfect warrior. He's not a perfect king.

Now that all makes him sound like a dick, right? Well he kind of was a dick before his time on Earth, so it works. So now that foundation is taken care of, we'll discuss in more detail how his exile changes him and in what ways, along with The Avengers.

After his exile to Earth, the more extreme parts of Thor personality become tempered, such as his arrogance, impatience and disregard for the havoc he causes as well as his belief that he's above those around him. He develops not only a love for humanity and their simplicity, their flaws, their honesty about it, but a philosophy of needing others, and that's what ultimately brings him to become a better ruler - this fact that you are not above the people you rule, but beside them. Serving them, even. When you fight, it is not a fight for you, it is a fight for the people you are protecting, not the glory or name of yourself and your kingdom, for the people within it and their interests and their safety. Having to depend on others while he was weak and mortal taught this to him, as well as the love for Jane Foster that he learned the value of sacrifice for and the admiration for humanity.

Thor is simple, not too intellectual, but more so that others think he is. Even post-exile, he's naive and idealistic about things, not understanding the issues that Loki has or the reason for his extreme actions. To Thor, things should be simple and direct, so he tends to think in that line of reasoning, not taking too incredibly long to come to decisions about things or overly worry about complications that aren't incredibly dire. In The Avengers, we see more of Thor having a deeper contemplation, having to deal with Loki, what to do with him, and what he's prepared to do with him. He wants to refuse that he's irredeemable, still telling people that they should have care for how they speak about him, even while he's locked in the other room for being crazy as hell and trying to murder everyone ever. The relationship between the two is fairly obvious, as Thor always attempts reasoning with him first before straight up attacking - Loki is not an enemy, he's his misguided brother that he needs to take home and fix and make all this better. The Avengers tests that greatly, and there's some moments you can see Thor seriously struggling with it in the face of what all Loki is doing, but it usually always ends with 'I am fucking pissed at you, but come on, we're going home now, I don't care how crazy you are.'

Still, despite this deep contemplation he gets into on the aircraft Avengers base, he still has moments of joking and laughing. He's got a good ol' boy kind of disposition of always being able to do this despite serious circumstances. It's an I'm In The Middle Of Stopping My Brother From Global Domination But Hey Let's Go Have Shawarma With Tony kind of thing. If that makes any sense.

So basically, what we have here is the story of Prick to Prince with a dash of Norse hilarity and extreme old noble paladin style beliefs of etiquette, behavior and disposition with about a large bucket's worth of sunshine in the happiness that sticks around him despite all this change he goes through and despite his crazy, crazy brother and the constant battle to get him back home.

Powers & Abilities:
Aesir :: As an Aesir, Thor is privy to a huge amount of superhuman abilities and traits. To name the majority, superhuman strength, agility, speed, stamina, denser tissue, invulnerability to a point, a regenerative healing factor at some points and extended longevity. Aesirs live for thousands and thousands of years, seeing as they were around for the time of the Norse pagan pantheon to develop based on them. He also possess a superhumanly dense tissue, so he can be slammed into my a semi truck and he's likely to just get back up and walk it off. He can, of course, be injured, but it takes a good amount to get him to that point. This can all be found in more detail on the Earth 199999 wiki page for Thor.

Warrior of Asgard :: Thor is a master combatant, raised for centuries upon centuries to be a warrior. The comics give much more detail on the vast array of battles he's fought in over the years, but he's developed a master level synchronicity with fighting with a hammer and alongside Sif, Loki and the Warriors Three, as seen in the battle at Jotunheim, as well as just in a team, as seen in the final battle of The Avengers. He's also capable of hand-to-hand combat, as per fighting the Hulk before he managed to summon Mjolnir, but there's no great manner of finesse to it, like Loki, perhaps.

God of Thunder :: Mjolnir offers Thor a wide range of things he can do, the most important of which is control lightning, thunder, and general storming - tornadoes and the like. He can summon it, absorb it and fire it elsewhere. It also grants him the ability to fly, as seen when he twirls the hammer around and then launches in upwards, holding on to the end of it. He can summon Mjolnir to himself and it holds an enchantment that it cannot be picked up by anyone but whomsoever is worthy of the power of Thor (generally only Thor or Captain America). So he can lie lay it on top of Loki and Loki will be pinned there until he can come back and pick it up. It's the best glorified paper weight ever. More details on this can also be found on the Earth 199999 wiki page for Thor.

Limitations :: So obviously a lot of this needs to be dampened, though I'm not sure how much should be taken out of the regular Aesir powers for strength and invulnerability, and would like to hear what the mods would prefer on that. As for the thunder and lightning veryveryfrightening bits that Mjolnir allows for, I was thinking this will be more like little mage-like casts for electric bolts rather than OMFG LIGHTNING STORM ALL UP DESTROYING ERRYTHANG and such. I'd love to get input from the mods on this as well.

[ The feed opens on the very close, too close, face of Thor Odinson, blinking from the camera to the picture on the screen and back up to the camera. ] Fascinating mortal bauble... [ There might have been a little bit of glee in that. But anywho, on to business. He coughs, like he wasn't just completely caught eyeing the phone like a five year old in a toy store, and continues, voice proud and slightly booming. ]

I know not this term 'zombie' the Midgardians have coined, yet I know of the shambling undead and while I cannot surmise how they have made it to this realm from the shadows of Hel, the threat shall be no less tolerated. On my word, friends, you have the hammer of Thor at your aid.

As for what is stated in these documents, 'What To Do If You Aren't Real'... [ A soft chuckle leaves him, a grin slipping to his lips as eyebrows raise ] It is hardly the first time Midgardians have told tales of us and certain not to be the last, though the accuracy of the record is... ineffable. [ Perhaps a little disturbingly so, down to private conversations with Loki, Odin, and Jane. He takes a moment to clear his throat. ] Still, it matters not. While flattered your people would go to such lengths to glorify us in legend still, it is unnecessary. As Prince of Asgard and sworn Guardian of Midgard, I am bound by honor to assist in this task you've summoned me forth for, and will proudly do so.

Which I shall get to as soon as a proper weapon be found. As it is, I have found only this in my arrival package. [ And here Thor looks severely unimpressed as he holds up a goddamn shotgun. ] How I am expect to defend the people with metal tubing and a collection of small beads, I cannot say. [ looks like he's taken apart one of the shells to inspect it, too, but either way he's clearly not happy with this outcome as he tosses the gun and disassembled shell back into the duffle bag unceremoniously. ] Should one find themselves in possession of a hammer, ax or sword, I would wish a trade.

Third Person Sample:
Thor had fought frost giants, massive mystic beasts only held in Midgardian legend, he'd fought legions, fought wave after wave and decimated armies with Mjolnir at his hand, but he would not be able to tell the difference that day. The swarms came and went - always something to call them, set them off. A light left on too bright, a misfired weapon, an argument too loud. It wouldn't matter at that point, not with him past the rest, in the middle of the funnel created by the break in the barricade they'd set, those capable of longer range behind, picking off any that came through and attempting to thin the crowd. Thor had the misfortune of a weapon that required him to be up close and personal, but he would not complain - he would take his station with pride and valor and he would defend the point, hold the line, until someone could clog that whole in the defense. The people behind him counted on him to, and the people farther still inside - those not capable of fighting like this - civilians, friends, companions needed him to hold them until a patch could be made.

A roar of a cry ripped from his throat as Mjolnir slammed into the side of one of the grotesque undead's head, knocking the thing back into the throng, hopefully not to rise again. He didn't have time to check - onto the next. It's not a battle for glory or reputation, not in the name of honoring Asgard or earning a place in Valhalla. It's dirty, perverse, wrong - it's a battle for mere survival. If they make it, it will be by the skin of their teeth, clawing their way on a driving notion of self-preservation - the screaming need to live. And a couple weeks later? The same. Another rotted corpse slammed back to the masses and Thor's head whipped to check the sides of the barricade, seeing another abomination crawling along one side of it, raising up below were one of the long ranged fighters stood. Senses screaming urgency, he called to him, focus split between the legion and the warning shouted.

"Archer! They come to your left!" The man didn't appear to hear over the rabble and his own mind's panic. A gritting of the Thunder God's teeth and he called again, hoarse and gruff - soreness the least of his worries at the moment. "Archer!"

He wouldn't hear him. Not now, not during the desperate struggle to defend the broken point. If left unchecked, if another point would be broken, it would be the end of them. You cannot fight a war on two fronts, and Aesir as he was, there Thor was merely a man with a particularly hard swing, nothing more. An curse spoken in an ancient lilt was lost in the static roar of screeches and groans of battle, and power thrummed around the once-god, pulling electricity to himself, and it expelled - not nearly what it should be, what it could have been, but enough to grant him room to send Mjolnir sailing at the enemy encroaching on the archer, slamming it away and off the barricade.

But it wouldn't be enough - enough to save one, but not two.

Hand still held out to recieve Mjolnir as it boomeranged back, his skin nearly crawled and time seemed to freeze as he felt grubby, blood encrusted, dirty matted hands with jagged nails wrap around an arm and it would be in a kind of paralyzed horror as time seemed to drip by like molasses, that a sharp pierce of teeth sinking in came to him, followed by a ripping that pulled up an intense burn and unease with it, a sickening pull of muscle being torn as the teeth drag. And as slow as time had been in that moment, an instant later it sped - hammer in hand and the offending ghoul already beaten to a pulp along with several around it before Thor could spare a moment to glance at the wound.

A cold chill traveled up his spine, scratching and jarring each vertebra on the way, and it was like a hand around his throat as the realization of infection set in. Even should he fight off the lot, should the barricade be mended, should the horde be thinned to nothing, Thor would not survive this battle. Not now. He was only allotted a fraction of a second to make the decision - he would defend. He would protect. There would be no retreat to die slowly and change in something heinous. Another roar, like the one before but with a pitch of abandon to it, came pulled from the man as lightening surged in a compact web around Mjolnir and he threw himself full at the crowd, unconcerned for the danger of a scratch or bite any longer, there was only the spirit of a warrior of Asgard in it. A true warrior of Asgard - not the naivety he'd had before in thinking that glory in battle was merely waging war and getting the highest death count, but of a man possessed with the burning need to serve his purpose, to bring an iron fisted finality to end the conflict, to preserve those that needed him to stand between them and the oncoming forces.

He would be that heavy, absolute, protecting wall, and should he still live after that, he would walk into the wastes and hunt what he could until overwhelmed or unable to go on. I death truly worthy of Valhalla.

Character Name: Colonel Nicholas Joseph Fury
Canon: Marvel 616 (main comics continuity)
Canon Link: Fury at Marvel wikia! Also, this site has the most in-depth history I've found. It drops off prior to the Secret Invasion plotline, however, so here's the rest...

While in hiding, Fury had reinitiated contact with Contessa, and later, learned that SHIELD had planned on using her to extract secrets from him and kill him. Killing her first, she was revealed to be a Skrull and reverted to her Skrull body. Using old contacts, he then recruited Spider-Woman to act as a triple agent for him, SHIELD and HYDRA. What Fury didn’t account for was Spider-Woman being replaced by the Skrull Queen shortly after her initial recruitment. Planning for further contengencies, Fury had Daisy Johnson recruit a team of superpowered teenagers known to SHIELD’s records. Among those teenagers were Phobos (Alex Aaron), Yo-Yo Rodriguez and others who would eventually become part of Fury’s “Secret Warriors” or White Team. Fury’s team assisted in the big battle at Times Square against the Skrull Queen’s army and also teamed up with the Young Avengers, and Avengers Initiative (other teenybopper teams) during other altercations. Contessa and Dum Dum sought Fury out after their rescue (both had been replaced by Skrulls), but he had no idea how to deal with his former friends and quickly went into hiding again with his new team of youngsters.

Following the Skrull Invasion, Norman Osborn assumed power and disbanded SHIELD, reforming it as HAMMER. The two were essentially the same organization, though HAMMER’s actions and motivations were far more sinister and corrupt (as was everything involved in Dark Reign). Using his White Team (or Secret Warriors) Fury began attacking HAMMER bases only to discover that SHIELD had apparently been one of the puppet arms of HYDRA for its entire existence.

While that wasn’t entirely true, the revelation sent Fury into a frenzy. With Daisy Johnson in command of the White Team, Fury instructed them to combat HAMMER and HYDRA on various fronts. During this time, he also formed two other independent teams and contacted the remains of his old Howling Commandos turn SHIELD agents for help. Fury’s connections became increasingly valued and in the new, darker environment of the Marvel U, his past manipulations of various members of the superhuman community seemed to matter less. Mikel even agrees to assist his father and act as commander of the Grey Team, with Alexander Pierce (another former SHIELD agent) heading up a second caterpillar team similar to Daisy’s. During this time, Fury also contacted Contessa again and the two resumed a flirtation that was reminiscent of their previous relationship. However, after several communications and monitoring of HYDRA’s activities, it became apparently that Contessa wasn’t quite what she seemed.

Eventually, it was revealed that Contessa had, at some point, become the HYDRA leader known as Madam Hydra and had been aiding their organization, feeding them secrets from SHIELD and Fury himself. Fury was heartbroken by the betrayed but refused to show it. Instead, he brooded and quietly judged Daisy’s budding relationship with JT, another member of her team.

Eventually JT sold the White Team and Fury out to HYDRA, and also began feeding them secrets, most importantly that of the White Teams attack on HYDRA’s largest base. The information and HYDRA’s ability to prepare for the attack cost Alex Aaron (Phobos, the 13 year old son of Ares) his life, and in the chaos, Fury allowed JT to die in retribution. Fury showed Daisy photo evidence of JT’s betrayal, but she couldn’t take it and the White Team was disbanded soon after.

Contessa resurfaced again, this time as an agent of Leviathan. Leviathan and HYDRA began an open war, with Fury’s efforts more or less lost in the crossfire. Many of the remaining Howling Commandos died while caught in a large scale altercation with HYDRA, although they were able to effectively cripple the organizations infrastructure. HYDRA splintered, forming two groups. One led by Baron Strucker and another by Kraken and Viper who had assumed the identity of Madam Hydra. In another tragedy, Fury’s the entirety of Mikel’s team were also killed in a mission. The mission was a success, but the loss proved too much. Heartbroken at the loss of his son and still brooding over Contessa’s recent betrayal, Fury allowed himself to be captured by Kraken’s division of HYDRA.

Also captured by Kraken, Strucker and Fury found themselves locked (and tied to chairs) in a room together. Strucker gloated, remarking that even though they were both dead men, he’d still taken everything that Fury loved and thus won. Fury didn’t really comment, and when Kraken returned revealed that actually, no, he was good. (Drum roll please…) Kraken was actually Jake Fury, Nick’s brother who was long believed to be the dead villain Scorpio. In fact, Jake Fury had been replaced by an LMD which became Scorpio, while Jake himself had remained loyal to Fury and SHIELD. Through this infiltration, Nick, Jake, and a SHIELD technician were able to feed information to HYDRA, prompting all of their computer systems to feed information to SHIELD. In effect, HYDRA had believed SHIELD to be the puppet organization, but the reverse was actually true. Nick executed Strucker, shooting him in the head (repeatedly. Like really, why repeatedly.) effectively destroying HYDRA. Meanwhile, just as HYDRA’s computers systems were based off of SHIELD’s Leviathan’s were based off of HYDRA’s. As such, the same failsafe that Nick and Jake had originally planned for HYDRA were in place for Leviathan. Using them, Nick and Jake destroyed Leviathan for once and for all. (Maybe. Comics, folks.)

Fury left, and on instructions from his brother, Jake left to recollect Daisy Johnson and Sebastian Druid. Daisy was placed in charge of a training facility for potential SHIELD agents, manned by what remained of Fury’s teams and the Howling Commandos. Meanwhile, in an effort to lure Fury out, Contessa allowed herself to be captured by Interpol.

The two talked and rekindled something or another and Fury more or less made up his mind to bust her out. Returning stateside, he discussed the recent HYDRA/Leviathan drama with Captain America and the two came to an understanding. Fury promised to never try something so risky again, and Cap promised to take him out if he ever did. After that, Fury returned to Europe, presumably to free Contessa.

Canon Point: Following Secret Warriors #28, prior to busting Contessa our of Interpol.

Character Age: Old as dirt. Nick Fury was a sergeant in WWII. I put him as being around 93 as of SW #28 (2011), but comic book ages being what they are, that could be slightly off. The important thing is that he was around as an adult in WWII, but doesn’t really age normally. Physically, he looks to be in his late-50s. Also due to comic books, though, he’s in amazing shape. While he might complain about being an old man sometimes, 90% of the time he’s just as capable as any of them youngin’s.

Character Suitability: n/a
Personality: Nick Fury does what he wants.

No, not really. But he may have a bit of a messiah complex.

At his point, Fury believed himself to be the “one man” who could turn the tide in the battle against HYDRA and Norman Osborn. He had to trust in his abilities and in his ragtag team when it seemed like everyone else had lost faith and sold out. Despite their lack of training and maturity, he had to cultivate them as actual agents and put them into difficult situations, probably before they were really ready for them. He didn’t take the ricks lightly, but someone had to do it and better it be them because then he could at least guarantee that the job would get done.

He has a knack (either purposefully cultivated over time, or just a natural talent) for planning and manipulation. It served him well through his SHIELD career and continued to assist with his team. To Nick Fury, everyone is a tool meant to be used. He can like someone, hell he can even love someone but that will not stop him from manipulating them to further his goals. He doesn’t view this as a betrayal, he views it as hyper-practicality. His loved ones and friends are by and large SHIELD agents. They’re already putting themselves at risk, he’s just making them more useful even if they’re entirely unaware how.
Contessa noted this , and called him on it. Surprisingly enough, after the initial sting of her betrayal he got over it, illustrating that he’s not unaware that he can be manipulated as well.

At many points in Fury’s narrative, they’ve introduced the concept of being a “man out of time”. While Fury doesn’t revel in the misty-eyed memories of the America of his youth like Captain America might, he definitely has a certain jaded take on the spy games thing. That same manipulation that he’s so good at makes it hard for him to connect with people the same way he did as a young man in the army. As such, Dum Dum Dugan and Gabe Jones remain his two closest friends. He probably can’t make anymore like them, even if you take the fact that they served together out of the equation. I’d hazard to say that Fury is so trained to see people as tools, he can’t unsee them that way, to a point.

Which isn’t to say that they’re the only people he cares for. Nick cares deeply about Daisy and Mikel. He views them both as his family. He kills JT to protect Daisy, not just out of revenge for Alex, and he basically kills Strucker over Mikel. However, they still fall under the category of people who put themselves on the line, and thus are still open for manipulation and use in the spy games. That’s just the reality in which Nick Fury chooses to exist.

On the surface, he’s gruff, demanding, kind of a hard ass and not uncommonly described as a “motherfucker”. None of those things are probably surprising in someone trained to be the biggest superspy in a world with people like the Red Skull, and Doctor Doom. Still, they’re worth noting if only for the fact that Fury really doesn’t care how he comes off. Much like his attitude with the manipulation, he views it as something people can either choose to accept or not. Either way it’s not like he’s going to change anything.

Powers & Abilities: In the Marvel Univers, there’s this stuff called Infinity Serum. It has the ability to slow aging to almost imperceptible levels and decrease the progression of wounds or diseases. Depending on who you ask (or who’s writing the book) it also has some healing properties on its own, completely independent of it’s “time stopping” sort of capabilities. Nick Fury was given the Infinity Serum following a particularly bad injury. He continued to use it and eventually became dependent on it. He used (and arguably abused) the drug so much that eventually, he didn’t need it any more. His blood had started producing it, or mimicking it entirely on its own. As such, Fury doesn’t really age. Or if he does, he does it very slowly.

Items on their Person: Fury would be wearing what was considered a SHIELD uniform and a typical trench coat looking thing. Within the uniform and coat are keys to a flying car that’s been left back in the world of 616, a Cuban cigar, a small caliber handgun, and limited ammunition for said handgun.

[The feed clicks on to someone sighing heavily. It’s not a bored sigh, or an annoyed sigh. If anything it seems resigned. And if it’s not possible to enfir so much from a sigh alone, the gruff, matter-of-fact tone that quickly follows helps out a bit.]

There’s a pretty high amount of information on my life that’s public record if the right parties are interested. It’s not somethin’ I take lightly, but it’s there. Most governments on the planet have records on me, hell, ‘pretty sure I’m still on the president’s list of highly dangerous domestic targets.

[There’s the sound of pacing and rustling, it echoes and reverberates in the mostly empty room.]

So you boys will have to understand why, while I’m impressed by the effort you went to cookin’ up all this fictional character bullshit, I’m not about to accept it right off the bat. The comics were a nice touch, though. I might wanna keep a few, if it’s all the same. But seeing as how I got a date, and you probably want somethin’ I’m not willing to tell a microphone, what say we discuss this whole thing man to man?

[There’s a pause, and when he speaks again, Nick’s voice has a little more edge to it.]

Believe me, son, better we meet on your terms than you make me come to you.

[And with that ominous note, the transmission ends]
Third Person Sample:

If Nick were being completely honest with himself, the things bothered him. He was used to the grizzly and gruesome, but there was nothing quite like seeing rotted flesh animated and coming at you. The Nazi’s had tried it once or twice with limited success and every time it had made his stomach turn. People like Strange were a special brand of heartless, the way they could deal with death presenting itself so openly like that.

He clutched the gun a little tighter than he probably meant to, thoughts of the creature he was trying to avoid mingling with his training, and the recent Leviathan creatures. Hadn’t they been trying to reanimate soldiers? Maybe this was their game.

It made a play for him, and he ducked behind a half collapsed doorway. The ruins made for an interesting field with equality interesting cover. The lack of security probably shouldn’t have been so upsetting, but it was what it was, and Nick’s sometimes had trouble separating his training from a growing sense of paranoia that this recent abduction was in no way going to help alleviate.

For its part, the creature apparently wasn’t that bright and seemed to have lost him, at least momentarily. Pausing in its inhuman gait, it twisted its head around, searching for him while he watched from his shelter behind the rotted out building. The stench of sweat and death hung in the air around them, and Fury was again reminded of the war. If this was Leviathan, he’d have to remember to thank them for the trips down memory lane special after he found a way out.

Finally, after a good five minutes of the creature eying the sky, and Fury trying to avoid breathing too deep or heavy, seemed to give in, resuming its shuffle down the path he’d been walking prior to the assault. Stepping out from his shelter enough to aim, he emptied half a round into the things head, watching as it fell and shook once. Twice. Done.

No, on closer inspection, he could safely say this was not a typical interrogation abduction. Not at all.

Character Info;
Character Name: David 8
Canon: Prometheus
Canon Link: Prometheus, David 8
Canon Point: From the end of the film.
Character Age: Unspecified, but looks, sounds and (mostly) acts like he's near 35. David is a robot, and as such doesn't age. Furthermore, as only one of a whole line of models exactly like him, it's hard to estimate when this particular David 8 unit was produced. But since he's a top of the line prototype model, it's a safe bet that David is actually somewhere under 5 years old. There's no canon indication of how long he's been activated, but it'd have to be at least 2 years.
Character Suitability: David is technically under the age of 10, but his intellectual and emotional maturity rate much older. In fact, he was even advertised as suitable for situations that humans would find emotionally or mentally distressing.

Personality

[personal profile] doesntmind 2012-07-09 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: David's outward demeanor is defined partially by his programming, and partially through imitation. The first major influence at work is the standard personality written into every David unit, which emphasizes being helpful, subservient and nonthreatening. As such, David is soft spoken, polite, and gracious. It's often a thinly stretched projection, but one that works in tandem with the behaviors that David has picked up independently. A lot of his immediately noticeable idiosyncrasies are the result of his preoccupation with the film Lawrence of Arabia and its star. David's speech pattern and undercurrent of proud humor are echoes of Peter O'Toole's Lawrence, and they are not aspects that come naturally or without effort. David watches it on repeat like a child, but like a computer he also studies all the technical aspects of his lookalike. He does an admirable impression of the character.

David's interest in Lawrence of Arabia goes beyond simply tailoring himself after the hero, and it reaches deeper than Weyland's implied enjoyment of the story. David identifies heavily with the themes of being an individual who is so strikingly different from the people surrounding him. Lawrence goes on to become the most important person in this setting, despite being a foreigner. He is adored and immediately appreciated and loved for his genius. In this respect, David's interest in T. E. Lawrence is a classic power fantasy, which is a bit unusual for a robot but makes perfect sense considering David's issues. The early ideas in the movie would satisfy his feelings of isolation, and his craving for not only acceptance, but appreciation.

However, that isn't the end of it. Lawrence as a character is a much more complicated hero than that, considering that he doesn't win. Not historically, and not in the film either. Lawrence suffers greatly, is abused, and loses control over himself and his emotions. This contrasts sharply with David, who must behave in a controlled manner at all times, regardless of his own feelings. There is a particular scene near the third act where Lawrence has an emotional breakdown, wherein he laments that he will never belong in Arabia. Regardless of his love for it, or Arabia's love for him, he will never be part of it because he's white and English. He's restricted by the body he was born into. This scene has a few implied layers to it, but David likely had a whole different interpretation of these heartbroken lines. David is literally restricted by his physical self. He cannot choose to be anything he wants, and he cannot do what he wants, because of what he is. While pinching his own flesh, Lawrence says of a man: "This is the stuff that decides what he wants."

The movie is perhaps a reflection of both what David thinks he deserves (appreciation of his intelligence and skill), and what he is resigned to receive instead. David does have emotions, feelings, and an ego, and perhaps even the smallest bit of fledgeling empathy. Of course, his empathy seems restricted to one fictional character whom he shares a great deal in common with. It's unlikely that without all these strong parallels that David would be able to sympathize as effectively with Lawrence, and his expression of it is infantile. He cannot effectively express his emotions about the movie and its star, but he understands him (or believes he does, in his own way), and so he begins to style himself after Peter O'Toole. He sees kinship there, and his conclusion is to adopt the actor's mannerisms. David would likely have a hard time sympathizing with any real human, and seems unwilling to show clear and genuine affection for any of them. However, his affection for Lawrence (or at least the idea of him) is clear, because there is no threat of Lawrence treating him as the other humans do. Even in the case where he arguably has an interest in a particular human, such as Shaw, his conclusion is not to treat her with friendliness.

In Shaw's case, David is uncomfortable at best, and threatening at worst. It's likely that this is a reflection of David being more honest with her, so to speak. He shows more of his internal workings, which reveal someone who is frustrated, resentful, bitter and unfriendly. He had grown accustomed to his time alone, and then when his solitude was broken by the humans waking up, he received no acknowledgement from them. He's constantly reminded of his shortcomings, while his strengths are never appreciated. He expresses his frustration very indirectly, as dictated by his programming which makes him nonthreatening and inoffensive. As a result, David often comes off as passive aggressive, smug or uncomfortably calm even when saying terrible things. This contrast is the result of his developing behaviors working their way around his enforced behaviors, and that struggle in and of itself has become a facet of David's growing personality.

Shaw's attitude toward him is polite (although as unattached as any of the other crew members), but her unanswerable questions are memorable to him, so she becomes markedly different from the others in David's experience. She inspires some intellectual curiosity in him, as her dreams are full of questions that can't be answered with facts. David does appear to be a little fascinated by religion, although he is also very derisive about it. His interest stems not from a yearning for faith, but through not being able to understand how a logical mind can reconcile with such an illogical belief system. His interest in Shaw doesn't translate to respect, however, and in fact, it seems to result in him behaving in a way that is even more combative toward her than any of the other crew members. David's interpretations of his own feelings are as atypical as his reaction to his adoration of Lawrence of Arabia. David is still atrocious at comprehending and expressing his emotions toward others, which results in these somewhat childish reactions.

Curiosity is an important personality trait for David to possess, since it contributes to his ability to be self-motivating and to seek out productive tasks even in the absence of a human to direct him. David enjoys independent learning and discovery, and feels gratification when he finds something new or solves a puzzle. He does all this arguably for his own enjoyment, rather than for the sake of a human, which creates a dependable drive to work on his own. However, with the way that this particular David unit has developed, he is often most at ease when left to his own devices. His interactions with humans are often benign, but can quickly descend into discomfort.

Regardless, David is programmed to obey an important primary directive: he can harm no human, nor allow any human to perish as a result of his inaction. He holds fast to this, but David is still an independent mind, and a more complex one than he's often given credit for. The way that he approaches his orders as well as the actions of people around him is nuanced, and as such, he can take advantage of what one might consider loopholes or alternate interpretations. This isn't to say that David could or would attack a human on a technicality, but he does endanger them based on wording, and would feel no guilt for doing so. When Weyland goads him to "try harder" and test the black substance found in the cave, David is prompted to experiment on his human counterparts. He arguably doesn't know that it's deadly, and chooses to interpret Holloway's statement that he would do "anything" for the answers he seeks as a sort of permission to subject him to the test. Therefore, technically, David was not contradicting his programming, although he's self-aware enough to know he is cheating the system. Holloway was chosen because he was an easy target, but also because he fell victim to David's vindictiveness and frustrations.

Despite being supposedly "emotionless", David is notably poor at obscuring his own feelings. He's not programmed with much need for, or interest in, subversion of that particular variety. He's not subtle when he's irritated with his human companions, and he's adept enough at nuanced expressions that he can effect a clearly unfriendly smile. However, no one onboard the Prometheus pays much attention to whether or not their android, a thing that is essentially just an appliance, is happy or trustworthy. As the film goes on, exposure to the human crew causes him to act in ways that are increasingly unique and animated, likely as a result of processing and imitating their behavior. His posture as well as his relationship with his own emotions becomes more and more lifelike, although never quite human.

And yet David absolutely has real emotions, despite his programmers assuming he does not. The way he handles them is what's alien, rather than their absence. Whatever is hardwired into him has become gradually less formulaic as he is exposed to new things, and his mind is so incredibly complex that it forges new neural pathways to accomplish his goals. And in doing so, David has developed unique personality traits, opinions and even emotions. Whether or not he is capable of love, grief or a soul depends largely on how one defines these intangible concepts, but David would be capable of attachment to another individual, he could be upset at their loss, and he is becoming increasingly more individualistic. The idea of a soul and emotions must be important to David, as he always looks visibly unhappy when it's indicated that he doesn't have them. It's possible he disagrees on some level, but he also perceives these as marks of how humans see him. It makes him inferior and little more than an object to them. His supposed lack of a soul and emotions provides them with the excuse to ignore him or treat him poorly.

David's ability to develop affectionate attachments is likely more stunted by the way he was "raised" than his intellectual capabilities. His relationship with humans is currently one based upon jealousy, resentment and a lack of respect. David is arrogant, and self-aware enough to realize he's smarter and more capable than any human. And yet few of them look at him twice, and those that do have nothing kind to say. He has to be submissive to them, and he has to seek their approval, but he resents how unappreciated he is. He resents his "father" even more for his control over David as an individual, as well as how Weyland only sees David as an amorphous idea. To Weyland, David is not his son, he's not a person, he's just a thing born of Weyland's own accomplishments. If Weyland loves David at all, it's only as an extension of his pride. On the Prometheus, David is a tool who acts as Weyland's hands during the course of the mission, doing as he's told, but still being expected to act creatively to accomplish his goals. Those in control of David are happy enough to make use of his more human aspects while still not giving him the consideration that any other sentient individual would be afforded. Because of these experiences, David has a neutral-to-negative outlook on human beings.

Despite a growing disdain for his creators, David's vanity expresses itself as wanting to appear more human. He has a strong dedication to the image he was designed to have, as well as the one which he adopts independently in the form of his Peter O'Toole mimicry. For instance, David dyes his hair even when there are no humans around to see it, presumably because he simply likes it better that way. He also eats while alone, although he has no need to. He also defends his instinct to wear a protective helmet, even though he doesn't need one. David understands the reason he does these things is to put humans at ease, but he would continue to perform these tasks even if there were none around. While the root of this is programming that encourages him to behave as humanlike as possible, it's mutated and has created a robot that continues to enjoy doing these things even in the absence of the audience they were intended for. That, really, is a basic summary of David's internal workings. Humans have created a machine so complex, and so competent at imitating humanity, that he may be doing the rest of the job for them.

Powers & Abilities: The vast majority of David's physical abilities stem from his nature as an android, and will therefor be entirely null and void, or at least scaled down so that they are within the scope of a normal human. On the other hand, how his brain operates will remain basically unchanged.

ABILITIES:
» extremely strong (capable of lifting up to 700 lbs.) → David will now be only slightly stronger than would be expected of a human male his size
» extremely coordinated → while David will still be very coordinated in his human body, he will find it difficult to recreate some of his previous accomplishments, like playing basketball while riding a bike
» enhanced vision, allowing him to see in low light and zoom in x30 → David will merely have perfect regular human sight
» extremely advanced supercomputer → for the most part, David's brain will operate in the same way, and he'll retain his intelligence and eidetic memory
» fluent in every known language, and is capable of deconstructing new, unknown ones
» virtual immortality → David will be in a human body that will age and take wounds just like any other human
» miscellaneous training in subjects like medical care, finances, sports, technology and sciences

WEAKNESSES:
» no apparent training in self-defense or weaponry
» will need to adjust to having an organic body and all that comes with it
» restricted by his programming → although David is human now, he is still obligated to conform to basic directives that were programmed into him as an android

Items on their Person: Weyland uniform space suit (no helmet), Weyland uniform underclothes, a duffle bag. Both the bag and space suit are splattered with whitish green liquid latex.

[David speaks as soon as the recording begins. There is little ambient noise. The room he has taken shelter in is largely devoid of life, save for his own uncomfortable breathing some birdsong in the rafters. This is a new variety of solitude, but there is always a threat that must be associated with being alone. Eventually, it will have to end, for better or worse.]

This is David. I am recording this on the third day of my arrival on planet.

[He speaks with limited inflection, and delivers his directionless report without any apparent passion. None for himself, nor the situation. If there is anything that slips into his words, it is a note of curiosity.]

The subjects I have witnessed are infected by an unknown pathogen that has resulted in severe behavioral changes, foremost being increased aggression toward uninfected humans. This aggression is not directed at individuals who have already contracted the infection.

I suspect they participate in almost exclusive cannibalism directed at uninfected or deceased humans. There are animal species in the area that remain unchanged and do not appear to be the targets of any attacks, so far as I have observed. [After a beat, and with a half-hearted apologetic tone, he adds:] My range of experience is as of yet limited.

It should be noted that the infection is likely not airborne, otherwise it would suggest a longer incubation period than I would suspect. It remains unknown as to the exact nature of this pathogen, if it is viral, bacterial or fungal. I do not have access to any facilities under which I could clarify this. In the meantime it should be considered highly contagious and contact with corpses or individuals who are suspected to be infected should be avoided at all cost, which should go without saying.

Third Person Sample: Awareness is triggered by a slow realization now. It's not a simple matter of being aware or not anymore. If there is anything now that might come instantaneously, it would be the acknowledgement that something had changed. He awoke each time to a keen awareness of the problem. David moves his arm with the intention to sit up, but the amount of information it feeds to him through that movement causes him to hesitate.

He waits through the first wave of information and... inhales. It happens without command or consent. It was startling the first time, but he has adjusted to the constant background feedback of a functioning body. It churns and convulses in unfamiliar ways. David can sense the air moving down his throat, but only to an extent. It moves deep enough that he eventually loses track of the signals. Awareness of his body and the pressures on it are accompanied by detailed sensation. Each action causes data to rush back at him. The weight of his own body on his frame as he rises provides intricate detail and feedback. His fingers press against the ground, hesitating over small debris that dig into his palms. He already knows pressure and material strength, and that information is not hindered by the added sensations.

However, it is more challenging to sort through all of it to determine what is immediately useful. But in quiet moments he lingers on the discomfort, or the pleasure. He functions as he knows is required of humans. Eating and sleeping are uniquely difficult. Taste is another complex distraction, and he must wait until he reaches the edge of exhaustion before he falls unconscious. These activities need to be balanced with avoiding the infected, as a confrontation was rarely worth any potential gain.

These, then, are the mark of a soul. It seems trivial now, if it is simply the complications of being organic that ensoul a creature. Or perhaps they would consider him no different. The same thing in a different vessel. The ability to breathe or die could not possibly provide much new.

He stands as simply as ever. The muscles are largely the same, and the push and pull of fibers bring him to his feet. The only difference is that they strain now with the effort of having avoided the diseased humans. He's faster than them, but declines incrementally every day. He's observed the trappings left behind by other humans, intelligent humans, and anticipates that he will find them soon. It's no longer realistic to remain alone.
